TWW Comment

On 17 December 1837 a fire began that destroyed the Winter Palace in St Petersburg. It burned for three days and the glow of the flames was visible up to 45 miles away. The disaster led to the deaths of 30 guardsmen and left only the stone exterior walls intact. The Hermitage collection next door was saved, and Tsar Nicholas I began rebuilding work as soon as possible after the blaze was extinguished.
