Description

Watercolour over pencil heightened with bodycolour on wove paper. This is a rare work by Henry Ninham, a second generation Norwich School artist. He was the son of an engraver whose business he inherited. He exhibited at the Norwich Society from 1818 and specialised in Norwich street scenes. The composition of the present work, a view down a street with a church spire behind, is typical of his work. This may be the picture exhibited at the Norwich Society of Artists in 1830, no.58 as 'View at Cromer.' An oil of this view by Ninham with different figures is in the Castle Museum, Norwich (1969.301.2 : F).
