Description

The view depicted is looking east up the Strand towards Mary Le Strand Church. Charles Dickens' parents married in this church in 1809. On the right of the image can be seen the North Wing of Somerset House. Designed by Sir William Chambers in 1776, Somerset House was once home to government departments and learned societies, for example The Tax Office and the Royal Academy of Arts were both based here.
