Description

Ruins of Manuel Priory, West Lothian. The Priory of Manuel was built over an earlier Culdee, or Celtic, church foundation which was dedicated to 'Our Lord in his aspect as Emmanuel', hence the new name. This house was founded in 1156 by Malcolm IV, as a Cistercian nunnery. Situated on the banks of the River Avon, the house conformed to the more reclusive and contemplative goals of the order.
