Description

This drawing shows Linlithgow Palace as viewed from the east. The arch-shaped entrance door in the middle of the drawing would once have been the main entrance to the palace, and a drawbridge would have been located in front of it. Although the palace is now a ruin, you can still see the ornate stonework above this entrance door. The name of the artist is not included. Linlithgow Palace has been a royal residence since the twelfth century. Although there was probably a royal manor-house on this site during the 1100s, it was not until Edward I of England built around the existing buildings in 1301 that a royal pedigree was established. However, David II destroyed Edward's buildings following the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. The ruined palace buildings seen today were built for James I of Scotland in 1425. The Scottish Parliament was also held here on several occasions.
