Description
This drawing is not dated but may be from about 1781. Although the page is unsigned, it appears likely that the artist was George Henry Hutton himself, who seems to have drawn several different castles in west Perthshire in 1781. This is the only image relating to Doune Castle in the Hutton Collection. Doune Castle sits on an elevated site overlooking the River Teith at Doune, north-west of Stirling. The castle dates from the late-fourteenth century, built for Robert Stewart, first Duke of Albany, who was the regent of Scotland from 1406 until 1420 during the imprisonment of the young James I by the English. Despite the fortress-like appearance of the castle, it was mainly a hunting lodge for monarchs throughout the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Sir James Stewart, first Lord Doune, assumed ownership of the castle in 1570, and eventually, through marriage, the castle became part of the estates of the Earls of Moray, to whom it has belonged ever since.
