Description

Subject depicts two figures, a dog and a horse on a broken ice shove; One figure is kneeling down beside the dog; the second figure is standing behind these two beside the horse - this figure appears to be searching around with his hand up to his brow.
This watercolour is from the same album as the watercolour by Surgeon Brown, dated 1852 (W290)
See also drypoint of " Loss of a Priest by a 'shove' of Ice on the St. Lawrence" / "Canadian Scenes No.", one of a group which seem to have been "Drawn for the Benefit of the Female Orphan Asylum Bazaar, Quebec April 1852." This print shows the composition reversed and with changes, e.g. standing figure is a woman in the etching, a man in the watercolour; dog looks upward in the print, downward in the watercolour. Both the watercolour and the print are amateur in quality
Lutyens was a member of the 20th Regiment of Foot, Lancashire Fusiliers who arrived in the Montreal area 1 April 1850.
