Description

A note in the bottom left-hand corner of this drawing reads, 'North Berwick Nunnery 1782'. It shows the remains of St Mary's Priory and part of the coastline around North Berwick, including the Bass Rock. A cow grazing in a nearby field has also been sketched in. There are at least two other drawings or plans relating to St Mary's contained in the Hutton Collection. St Mary's Priory is thought to date from the twelfth century, when it was founded by Duncan, Earl of Fife. It was one of three Cistercian houses in the Lothians: the other two were the priory at Haddington and Newbattle Abbey, near Dalkeith. The Cistercians were also known as 'white monks' due to the white robes they wore. Established in 1098 by St Robert, they were devoted to prayer and physical toil.
