Description

This is a drawing of the ruins of Coupar Angus Abbey, Perthshire and much of the surrounding area. The artist has written 'tollbooth' in the foreground, suggesting that this view is from outside the tollbooth. A number of other drawings and plans in the Hutton Collection also detail the Abbey and its environs. Founded in the mid-twelfth century by King Malcolm IV, Coupar Angus Abbey was home to members of the Cistercian Order. Also known as, 'white monks', due to their simple robes, the Cistercians chose an austere existence, dividing their time between prayers and working the land. The monks at Coupar Angus Abbey successfully traded wool with continental Europe.
