Oostbroek is a former abbey (Sint-Laurensabdij). The Oostbroek estate gradually developed from this , which is one of the nature reserves managed by Het Utrechts Landschap. Shortly after the middle of the 16th century, the St. Lawrence Abbey was in serious financial trouble with the number of monks decreasing. Around 1580, the Sint-Laurensabdij and the Vrouwenklooster were subsequently demolished. With the Reformation , the goods of the Abbey of St. Lawrence in 1586 fell to the States of Utrecht , the goods of the Women's Monastery to knighthood . Shortly afterwards, the Oostbroek house was built on the abbey grounds.
