Description

This watercolour copy is from a drawing made on the spot by Captain E. H. Columbine in 1792. It shows the north, now outside, wall of the chapel. The copy is unsigned. The cloisters and administration buildings are behind the chapel, to the south of this view. Reginald, Lord of the Isles, who installed his sister Bethoc as its prioress, founded this nunnery in 1203. The house was of the Augustinian Order. The only other practising Augustinian nunnery in Scotland was in Perth. The nunnery slipped into gradual decline and closed at the Reformation.
