Description

This print of a drawing by George Henry Hutton, of the south-east view of St Mary's Collegiate Church, Haddington, appeared in the 'Archaeologia Scotica or, Transactions of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland', published in 1792. The detail shown by Hutton extends to include the sixteenth-century Nungate Bridge and much of the surrounding area. Known as the 'Lamp of Lothian', possibly due to the red sandstone used in its construction, St Mary's Collegiate Church dates from the fourteenth century and is the largest parish church in Scotland. Along with St Giles in Edinburgh and St Michael's in Linlithgow, St Mary's is also considered one of the great pre-Reformation churches of the Lothians. Badly damaged in 1548, the church underwent partial restoration at the behest of John Knox (1505-72). It was not fully restored until the 1970s. Hutton's drawing clearly shows that the main body of St Mary's at this time was still open to the elements.
