Description

This is one of a series of drawings in the Hutton Collection made at Perth Barracks in 1783. Although this drawing is unsigned, it was almost certainly the work of George Henry Hutton himself, who is named as the artist on engravings made in the early nineteenth century. In the titles of all but two of the series, however, the barracks is named Gowrie Castle. The baronial mansion which housed Perth Barracks in 1783 was originally the town residence of the Ruthvens, Earls of Gowrie. After an incident in 1600 when the third Earl and His brother was killed by James VI's attendants during an alleged assassination attempt on the King, the Ruthvens were forfeited and Gowrie House handed over to Perth burgh council. In 1746, after the Battle of Culloden, the council presented the house to the Duke of Cumberland, who promptly sold Gowrie House to the British Government so that it could be converted into barracks.
