Description

The title of this south-east view of Hamilton Collegiate Church, Lanarkshire is, 'Remains of (I suppose) the Collegiate Church of Hamilton, S.E. View'. The artist has dated it October 15th, 1800, but has not signed it. This is one of four views of the church contained in the Hutton Collection. Hutton's note under the title reads, 'The situation is close to the palace, and has been long the Family Burial Place'. Hamilton Collegiate Church was founded in 1450-1 by Sir James Hamilton, 6th Lord Cadzow, 1st Lord Hamilton, and ancestor of the Dukes of Hamilton. The church was the burial place for the Barons and Dukes of Hamilton until the building of the Hamilton Mausoleum in the mid-nineteenth century, and when the 5th Duke of Hamilton demolished the Collegiate Church in the early eighteenth century, the transept housing the Hamilton burial vault was left intact.
