Ludwig Becker was one of 19 members of the Burke and Wills expedition (Victorian Exploring Expedition) of 1860-1861, which attempted to cross the Australian continent from south to north. He died on the journey, as did six other men (including the leaders Robert O'Hara Burke and William John Wills). This painting was made near Moorara, Harcourt and Keiara Stations, on the banks of the Darling River as the party made their way to Menindee.
