Description
This undated drawing depicts Edinburgh Castle, as viewed from Princes Street. The bridge in the bottom right corner crossed over the loch that previously existed at this point in the Princes Street Gardens. It is quite likely to have been Hutton himself who made this drawing. Located on top of an old volcano 300 feet above sea level, Edinburgh Castle boasts an eagle-eye's view of the surrounding area. Although there has probably been a fort here for about 3000 years, the modern castle is a mixture of buildings constructed over various centuries. The famous Castle Esplanade is immediately below the flag to the left of the drawing, and is the location for the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, which takes place during the festival in August.
