Description
This watercolour is part of a set of six depicting the 'Akbar' in different weather conditions and on different dates throughout August and September of 1815. This shows the 'Akbar' from her port-bow side under a stormy sky. The rolling swell of the sea is forcing her to pitch at an extreme angle to her starboard side and she appears to have sustained some storm damage. The print is signed by the artist on the mount at the lower right. George Back joined the 'Akbar' as midshipman in 1814, after having been a prisoner of war from 1809. Medium includes graphite.
