Description

The Macartney Embassy was a British diplomatic mission to China. In 1793, George Macartney travelled to Beijing to meet with the Qianlong Emperor with the aim of opening trade opportunities for Britain in China. In 1792, William Alexander was appointed as one of the draughtsmen to the Macartney Embassy. He returned to England in 1794.
