Description
A watercolour showing figure studies. A female figure is shown to the lower left. She is shown full-length, facing right and leaning on the railing of a ship, probably the SS Polynesian. A male figure is shown seated under an unbrella above. He is shown full-length, seated in a chair and facing forward. He has sheets of paper on his lap, possibly a newspaper or sketchbook. Inscribed lower right: Hilda
Hilda Montalba was one of four artistic sisters who were all friends with Princess Louise. Hilda and her sister, Clara, visited the princess in Canada in 1879.
The SS Polynesian was an Allan Line steamship which sailed between Liverpool and Montreal on a regular basis.
