In front of the Hon. John Bateman's house at Old Windsor

Date

18th century

Artist

Description

A watercolour drawing of a seventeenth-century red brick house and a lake, with an ornamental Chinese bridge. Several figures including horses at the pool and fishermen. Inscribed in pencil in the artist's hand, 'In front of the Honble John Batemans house at Old Windsor 1750'. The date has possibly been added later. A faint reflection of the bridge in the water is drawn in pencil. It is not certain whether this drawing is by Paul or Thomas Sandby.
The inscription is probably incorrect and refers to the Hon. Richard Bateman (1705-1773), a connoisseur, collector and patron who rented an old inn at Old Windsor and was much interested in the contemporary fashion for chinoiserie.

Possibly by Thomas Sandby (1721-98)
