Description

This watercolour probably represents the fountain in Algiers cited by the museum of Auxerre as one of the artist's best known subjects. In the strong and raw light of the eastern summer, a rider comes to drink in a beautiful architectural fountain which is typical of the Algerian capital (there were more than seventy recorded in 1843). These fountains are monuments of white stone, often decorated with arches, arabesques and zelliges.
