Description

The looms, shuttles and other weaving equipment of Caroline Islanders, Below the drawing is a numbered key explaining the side and end views of the loom, its roller, knives, rods, shuttles, a particular pattern of weaving and details of the Caroline Islands knots compared with the European style.

Based on an ink drawing by Jules LeJeune, artist with Duperrey during his 1822-1824 visit to the Pacific. This watercolour version was prepared by Chazal and engraved as Plate 54 for L. I. Duperrey's Voyage ... sur la Coquille ... 1822-1825. Histoire du voyage. (Paris, 1826)
