The Islington Church Act 1750 was passed when this church fell into 'a very ruinous condition' and needed rebuilding. The new church was consecrated on 26 May 1754. It was largely destroyed on the third night of the London Blitz in 1940 (only the spire and tower were left standing) and the church was again rebuilt.
