Description

Signed, inscribed and dated by the artist. Part of the Michael Graham-Stewart slavery collection. The ship depicted is almost certainly 'L'Antonio', 'the celebrated piratical slaver' painted in oils by the Plymouth marine artist Nicholas Matthew Condy (1818-51) and issued as an engraving in 1845. John Robert Mather was born in Newcastle. He went to sea as a boy and rose to have a command. By 1862 he was painting professionally and exhibiting watercolours regularly at the Society of British Artists, London.
