Description
In this semi-abstract work Melville depicts a couple rowing along the River Thames beneath Streatley Bridge. The rich tones and so-called 'blottesque' technique, in which blobs of pigment are applied to a wet ground, used by the artist through the 1880s, and greatly influenced the group of painters known as the Glasgow Boys who were working at this time.
