Description
Winter; January by George Sheffield Junior, watercolour on paper, 1868. A tree-lined road recedes into the obscure distance, deeply covered in snow. A band of horsemen and waggons gallop along it, away from the viewer. Ravens gather in the wheel-ruts. To left, a hall and church are visible between the trees. Sheffield was named after his uncle George Sheffield Senior, who was also a important local painter. Although born in Wigton Cumbria, Sheffield Junior left the county and this work was painted during his time spent living in Bews-y-Coed, Wales.
