In 1785 the play 'Omai, or, a trip around the world' by John O'Keeffe was staged at Covent Garden Theatre, London, with costumes and scenery by Phillip James de Loutherbourg. This watercolour derives from this staging, showing not just Omai's costume, but scenery and other characters in the background."
Biographical History: Omiah or Omai, ca 1751-1780, was brought aboard Cook’s second voyage by Captain Furneaux in 1774. He came from the island of Huahine near Tahiti. Omai became the first South Sea islander seen in Britain. He stayed in England for two years where his activities were widely reported on, and he inspired poets and artists.
